Bicycle Regulations

It is the responsibility of all individuals operating a bicycle or non-motorized device on campus to read and fully understand the Bicycle (and Non-Motorized Transportation) Parking and Traffic Regulations.

Bike Classes / Maps / Guides

• "FREE" Bike Safety Classes (Pima County): Learn how to safely operate a bicycle in a variety of situations. Classes offered for the novice up to the advanced rider. Upon successful completion receive a variety of FREE bicycle accessories (U-lock, helmet, lights, etc.).

Bicycle Safety Overview

• Stop at all posted Stop signs.
• Yield to pedestrians around sidewalk and pedestrian crossings. Stop at posted pedestrian crossings when indicated to do so.
• Look both ways before crossing an intersection.
• Don't ride against traffic. Always ride with the flow of traffic.
• Cyclist under 18 years of age must wear a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet when riding a bicycle.
• Use hand signals when turning.
• Yield at all posted Yield signs.
• Any bicycle that is used at night must have at least a white headlight visible from a distance of at least five hundred feet to the front and a red reflector on the back visible up to three hundred feet away.
• A bicycle shall be equipped with a brake that enables the operator to make the braked wheels skid/stop on dry, level, clean pavement.
• A person shall not operate a bicycle equipped with a siren or whistle.
• Practice defensive cycling at all times while riding. Be aware of your surroundings and don't assume a motorist sees you.
• Violations of traffic and bicycle laws are subject to fines.

Bicycle Parking

Bicycle parking is available throughout campus and is designated by the presence of bicycle racks, blocks, lockers, and/or specifically designated bike parking areas/enclosures. Bicycles must be parked only within the boundaries of designated bike areas/enclosures and properly attached to a bike rack/block or within a bike locker.

Park Your Bike With Added Security!

Parking and Transportation Services offers two improved options for cyclists who desire more security for bicycle parking/storage. Rentals available to UA students or employees only.

Bicycle Lockers: Bicycle Lockers: Lease an individual high-security bicycle locker. Fees: $90 annual rental (08/11/08-08/14/09). $60 refundable key deposit required. Fee prorates daily. No refunds after April 3, 2009. Currently, we offer bicycle lockers in the following areas: AHSC (located near the bus stop on Drachman Circle(6 lockers/12 spaces), Sixth Street Garage on west end (4 lockers/8 spaces), Nugent Bldg S.E. side (6 lockers/12 spaces), Bio West Bldg. N.E. side (6 lockers/12 spaces), Comstock Bldg. N.E. side (5 lockers/10 spaces), Keating Bldg. N.E. side (5 lockers/10 spaces). We have plans to expand bike locker parking locations throughout campus by the end of 2008. Additional locations will be posted as they are implemented.

Bicycle Enclosures: Convenient, gated, keyless entry locked enclosures with individual assigned spaces that are security fenced, covered and protected from inclement weather. The enclosures are located inside the following Parking Garages and have the following bike parking spaces; Main Gate (42 spaces), Tyndal - North side (24 spaces) South side (58 spaces), Park (20 spaces), Highland (36 spaces), Cherry (15 spaces), and Second Street Garage (15 spaces). The Main Gate Garage has free-standing metal parking stanchions with attached security cables. The other bike enclosures contain bicycle racks. You will use your own U-Lock to secure your bike in its assigned space and be given a unique individualized entry code. Fees: $35 annual rental (08/11/08-08/14/09). Fee prorates daily. No refunds after April 3, 2009.

Note: Parking and Transportation Services does not guarantee that the bicycle enclosures are vandal or theft-proof.

Bicycle Restrictions Overview

• Bicycle parking is not permitted in any University building; against a tree, plant, bush, signpost, meter, fence, railing, ramp, stairway, public seating fixture or pipe.
• Riding a bicycle on a sidewalk, in a parking structure (unless othewise noted), or in a building, is not permitted.
• Do not ride a bike in designated "walk your bike" or signed prohibited areas. These areas are very congested with pedestrian traffic and/or limit visibility. Riding in these areas pose safety issues for both cyclist and pedestrians.
• Bike racks/blocks are not to be utilized for long term bike storage. Bikes that are in a state of disrepair and appearing to be abandoned are subject to impoundment.
• Bicycle related gear (or other items) should not be left alone at bicycle racks. Items such as; locks, chains, helmets, seats, wheels, etc. left on racks may be considered abandoned and are subject to impoundment.

Bicycle Enforcement

• If you are approached by a Bicycle Safety Enforcement officer, please understand they are there to help you understand the bicycle regulations, educate you on cycling procedures, and help keep the campus safe from accidents. They are also available to assist you should you need them regarding a bicycle issue.
• Parking and moving violations are subject to fines and possible impoundment. Infractions are subject to sanction/citations of twenty ($20.00) or more. See the Bicycle Rules and Regulations link above for more detail.

Bicycle Theft

As is the case on many college campuses these days - due to the vast quantity of parked bicycles - theft can be a problem. A few seconds is all a thief needs to take your bike when it is unsecured. Professional thieves can steal your bike within a few minutes even when secured. To help protect against bicycle theft it is recommended that you utilize an inexpensive bike for your campus commute. When locking your bicycle always utilize a good quality U-Lock. Be sure to secure the front wheel and frame to the bike rack.

Bicycle registration is free, strongly recommended, and may help prevent bike theft. It also may help recover your bike in the event of theft. See "Bicycle Registration" below.
